Artist of the Month
The art of Casey McCabe was
displayed from Sept. 30 to Oct. 28, 2007.
Artist's Statement"STREET ZEN and JAZZ" Art by Casey McCabe STREET ZEN Back
in February, when the ground was cold and the streets appeared barren
and desolate-I started finding little, intriguing scenes as my dog
(Duv) and I walked the neighborhood. Three thoughts came to mind: 1)
Beauty can be found anywhere if you are paying attention; 2) Years ago,
while living in Japan, I was impressed with how the Japanese would turn
the smallest space into a work of art. What I was seeing now were small
works of art appearing naturally; 3) I have oil paints and I could
paint the scenes-even though I hadn't painted in over 25 years.
A monster was created; a happy monster but a bit of a compulsive monster. I wanted to do 10 paintings a month-there were so many images I wanted to capture. Someone said once "If you want to know something-draw (paint) it." I wanted to know the beauty t[h]at surrounded me. I have lived in the same S.E. Heights neighborhood for over twenty years and only in the last eight months have I woken up, paid attention, and come to know and love what I had never really looked at and had always taken for granted. Once I started this project and showed some paintings to friends, I got a couple of comments that defeated my purpose. One was: "Why don't you go to the mountains and paint what's there?" I don't live in the mountains. If I can't find beauty where I live then my soul would be starved and withered. That is no way to live. The other comment was: "I can see beauty in the sunset but that's about it." How sad to miss so much right here, right now, and right in front of you. I hope that this show will help other's to appreciate little things closer to home. JAZZ
After
getting to know these small scenes of natural beauty- I began playing
with them- changing colors, textures, and size which reminded me of
jazz. I am musically impaired but it seems to me that jazz is playing
with music-deconstructing, reconstructing, embellishing, etc. That's
what I wanted to do with my images. I hope they [are] as fun to look at
as they were to create.
