Artist of the Month -- June, 2007
The
art of Beau Carey was displayed from June 3 to July 1, 2007.
Artist's Statement
for Alyson...
This
group of paintings stems from themes that have occupied my work for
more than a year now. While it seems unusual to include both abstract
works among the more naturalistic object paintings, they do share
similar origins. Perhaps what is most significant is that they were all
completed between February of this year and the present. In this way
they represent something more than what is painted. For me they
showcase a time when I was allowed to work freely and unencumbered.
This is why some teetered in abstraction, simply because I felt they
could. The paintings themselves speak to a tradition, an act of staying
put that other media seem to lack. The painted objects are abandoned,
many of them appliances or cars that no doubt held significance to
their one time owners. This bizarre graveyard showcases a modern trend
in which everything will eventually be abandoned; everything eventually
will be replaced. With the newness of things comes a kind of modern
value. These objects stand on the edge of a madly growing city. They
are precursors to development. Development that is so insanely quick,
so insanely similar in its features that disorientation and loss seem
to be the only by-products. The city becomes unrecognizable, a
haphazard maze driven by convenience and economics. The objects I paint
become less like tombstones and more like signposts marking the
every-changing edge of a society's relationship with its surroundings.
The abstractions center more on the act of mark making, whether on the
land or on the canvas. Ultimately if any of these paintings are
successful even if only in parts, it is due largely to my wife's
patience during the time they were made. Without her very little would
get done. My only regret, for her sake, is that I wish these paintings
were better.
