Artist of the Month

The art of Kathleen Keating was displayed from February 3 through March 2, 2008.

Artist's Statement
Drawing the Body:
Memory, Mimesis, and the Florence Academy
by Kathleen Keating

I went to the Florence Academy of Art because I wanted to learn how to draw utilizing the same curriculum that was taught in the nineteenth-century at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. This included drawing from original Charles Barque lithographs, 'Master' drawings, plaster casts, drapery studies, portrait drawings, life drawing, and working from memory.

Daniel Graves, the FAA director, told me that "art is like organization -- a recipe to express once the rules are learned." The rules of drawing at FAA were honest, open, and simple, but extremely difficult to master. I learned the importance of accurate proportion and how to measure and then check my drawings for accuracy. I had the opportunity to slow down, and really look at what I was drawings. I might spend up to fifteen hours drawing the contour of the figure, beginning with large shapes and then moving on to smaller ones.

Physically, the classes were demanding. Students were only permitted to draw while standing. The observational position was always the same and artists marked a position with tape on the floor. From this same place and distance, I measured and memorized my mark making on the drawing board.

The learning experience at FAA has fundamentally changed the way I approach my art. I now understand the nineteenth-century principles and techniques of representational art and can apply the methodology with confidence.

The artist would like to thank the following individuals and organizations for making this exhibit possible: O'Niell's Pub, George Farr, The University of New Mexico, Roland Rodriguez, Daniel Graves and all the instructors and life models at the Florence Academy of Art, Florence, Italy, and the Factory on 5th Art Studios.

All proceeds from this exhibit will go to the LIVESTRONG Foundation.
